04 — Who runs My Social Time?

My Social Time has been formed by Dan and Neil, who met while both working at a special school. Dan works in a life skills centre for young adults with special needs and Neil is a Deputy Head at a special school. Between them they have worked with people with special needs for over 30 years and are passionate about helping people reach their potential.

05 — Why did you start My Social Time?

Through experience running a remote timetable during the COVID-19 lock down we know that sessions such as these have a positive impact on young people who are socially isolated and in some cases have helped improve communication skills due to the focused nature of the sessions.

We want everybody to feel like they are part of a social group and recognize the massive impact social isolation and loneliness can have on people's mental health and self esteem.

People with a learning disability are seven times as likely as their non-disabled peers to be lonely

-according to research from Mencap.

Social isolation and loneliness can be a devastating thing for an individual's confidence and overall mental health. The recent COVID-19 lock down and social restrictions have highlighted a problem which is unfortunately faced by many people and was even before the pandemic. It has shown the importance of social connections in our day to day lives. When the routine of these connections is disrupted by unexpected changes this can have a severe effect on people, especially if they find it challenging to make these connections in the first place.
